In the fast-paced world of timber manufacturing, where precision, durability, and efficiency are paramount, innovative solutions can make all the difference. We’re excited to share a recent case study from BSW, part of the Binderholz Group, highlighting how REA UK’s cutting-edge technology is transforming operations at two key sites.
We recently completed a successful upgrade at BSW Dalbeattie, following an earlier installation at BSW Fort William—both now running the new REA JET UP printer. This high-speed 70m/pm slat marking system prints from the bottom up, a unique engineering approach that keeps printheads fully protected from knocks and debris. By incorporating precision engine mounts and counterweights, it ensures stable, high-quality prints even in one of the most abrasive production environments. The results? Sharper, darker, and more consistent branding; reliable traceability at full production speed; and significant cost savings over previous systems. These installations underscore why the REA JET UP is setting a new benchmark for timber marking, combining durability, accuracy, and efficiency for the modern wood industry.
The Challenge: Navigating Harsh Timber Production Environments
Timber mills like those at BSW face unique challenges in marking and coding. Processes such as sawing, planing, and extrusion generate dust, vibration, and uneven surfaces—think damp, bowed, or knotted slats that can wreak havoc on traditional marking systems. Previous methods often struggled with maintaining legibility at high speeds (up to 200 m/min), leading to downtime, scrap, and costly recalls. Moreover, compliance with UK forestry standards like FSC/PEFC demands unbreakable traceability, from raw logs to finished construction timber. BSW needed a solution that could deliver high-contrast, long-lasting marks on treated, planed, and graded timber without interrupting production flow.

In abrasive settings, printheads are particularly vulnerable to damage from passing timber, which can result in inconsistent output or frequent maintenance halts.
We recognized these pain points and tailored the REA JET UP to address them head-on.
The Solution: Introducing the Versatile REA JET UP System
At the heart of this upgrade is the REA JET UP, a high-resolution inkjet printer based on piezo technology, designed for demanding industrial applications like wood marking.
This German-engineered system boasts up to 1200 dpi horizontal resolution (with peaks at 1500 dpi horizontally and 360 dpi vertically), delivering sharp text, barcodes, graphics, and logos with exceptional contrast. Its print height reaches 108mm per head, expandable to 700mm with cascaded heads, making it ideal for large-format marking on timber stacks, boards, or pallets.

What truly sets the REA JET UP apart is its versatility and rugged build. Constructed from IP65-rated stainless steel, it operates reliably in temperatures from -5°C to 45°C & is perfect for dusty, vibrating mill environments in all climates.
The smart ink circulation system prevents nozzle blockages, with RFID-tagged consumables ensuring the right ink is used every time—options include fast-drying UV-curing and oil-based inks that adhere to absorbent surfaces like wood and resist weathering for the timber’s full lifecycle.
Diving Deeper: The Innovative Bottom-Up Installation Process
One of the standout features in the BSW installations was the strategic mounting of the REA JET UP underneath the timber line for upward printing—a brilliant initiative that showcases the system’s adaptability.

Traditional top-down marking exposes printheads to direct contact with passing timber, risking bumps, debris accumulation, or outright damage in high-speed operations. By positioning the printer below the conveyor, we eliminate these hazards entirely. The printheads fire ink upwards onto the timber’s underside, ensuring consistent, contact-free application without any interference. The installation process itself was meticulously engineered for minimal disruption.
Our team at REA UK began with a thorough on-site assessment at both Dalbeattie and Fort William, evaluating line speeds, timber variations, and existing infrastructure.
Custom precision engine mounts were designed to secure the system firmly, while counterweights balanced the setup to maintain stability amid vibrations from the chain conveyor above. Heavy-duty bump plates were incorporated to handle uneven or broken slats, preventing any printhead contact with the product. Integration with the mills’ grading systems allowed for automated triggering of print on passed or failed slats,
REA also offers the capability of inline vision & verification for every mark, and real-time data syncing for traceability. Future proofing BSW for the introduction of the digital product passport in the construction materials industry.
The ‘bottom-up’ approach not only protects the hardware—extending system lifespan beyond 10 years in rugged settings—but also enhances print quality.
Real-World Benefits: Sharper Branding, Smarter Operations
The impact at BSW has been transformative. Sharper, darker branding elevates product presentation, while reliable traceability at full speed minimises errors in the supply chain. By reducing downtime, the UP delivers significant cost savings.
REA also offers bespoke software modules provide factory-wide visibility, allowing operators to monitor and adjust from a central dashboard.
In essence, the UP isn’t just a printer—it’s a comprehensive solution that adapts to the wood industry’s demands, from multi-coloured dots for sorting to full traceability codes for logistics.
